National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur formerly known as Regional Engineering College, Hamirpur was one of the seventeen Regional Engineering Colleges of the country which have now been converted into NITs. This Institution was established in the year 1986 as a joint and Co-operative enterprise of the Govt. of India and Govt.of Himachal Pradesh. The goals of the Institute as embodied in the EFC Memo are truly remarkable in their scope of vision. These provide for undergraduate and postgraduate education in engineering fostering the spirit of national integration among the students, a close interaction with industry and a strong emphasis on research, both basic and applied.
The Institute came into existence to offer Bachelor Degree Programme in Civil and Electrical Engineering in 1986. After consolidating these courses an undergraduate proramme in Electronics & Communication Engineering was started in the year 1988. The undergraduate programmes in Computer Science & Engineering and Mechanical Engineering were started subsequently in the year 1989 and 1994 respectively and the Bachelor Degree Course in Architecture has been started from the year 2000.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India have accorded its approval to start Post Graduate Programmes at this Institution from the academic session 2005-2006. To start with admission to Ph.D in Engineering and Applied Sc.& Humanities alongwith the M.Tech. courses in i) Civil Engineering(Water Resource Engineering) ii) Electrical Engineering (Advanced Power System and Control) iii) Mechanical Engineering(Computational Methods and Experimental Techniques in Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer) were made by this Institution from academic year 2005-2006.
The Institute has been designated as National Institute of Technology and got the status of Deemed University and hence enjoys complete autonomy in academic affairs. It is managed by an autonomous Board of Governors consisting of nominees of the Central and State Government besides Industry and other Educational Institution/Universities. The Institute is fully financed by the Central Government.
During the past 20 years, the Institute has steadily grown in size as well as in the range of activities. To achieve its goals, the Institute has taken several initiatives which interalia include research, modernization of laboratories, review of curriculum, new programmes of collaboration and interaction with industry and academic institutions etc.
CAMPUS
The Institute campus is located at Anu in Hamirpur District of Himachal Pradesh and is 4 Kms. from main bus stand on National Highway-70 Hamirpur-Sarkaghat-Mandi road . The City of Hamirpur is well connected with the rest of the country by road. The nearest broad gauge rail head is at Una (Himachal Pradesh) which is 80 Kms. from Hamirpur.
The campus has an area of 230 acres in the picturesque surrounding facing snow clad Dhauladhar Mountain ranges It is surrounded by lush green pine trees. The campus is well laid with roads, electricity installations, water supply, underground drainage etc. The place has healthy climate with moderate temperature ranging from 04 degree Celsius to 40 degree Celsius with an altituted of 900 meters.
